English I students finished up the work on figurative language, examining metaphors, similies, personification, hyperbole, and idioms to determine the tenor and the vehicle.

Notes from fourth and fifth periods

We then went over meter for the last fifteen minutes of class. It won’t be on any test, but a basic understanding of meter will help when we turn to Shakespeare (coming soon) and will help with the extra credit for the soon-coming poetry test. (The rest of the presentation/information/practice is attached below.)

English 8 turned to our horror selection in keeping with the season. We’re trying an experiment with No Red Ink, so we prepared for “The Tell-Tale Heart” by examining a drawing of Poe and drawing some conclusions about him based on the observations we made.

We then drew some conclusions about the man from the observations we made and wrote a short argumentative paragraph about it. (Yes, another argument paragraph — we’ll be doing that over and over and over and over and over until everyone masters it!)

Homework

  • English 8: 
    • complete any missing No Red Ink;
    • complete the summary of “What Is the Horror Genre?” on Google Classroom (as needed).
  • English I Honors: prepare for the tone words (first column of positive tone words) on Friday.
