English 8 students had their first Socratic Seminar to discuss the statements we wrote about yesterday during our anticipatory session for our new unit.

  1. Sometimes, it’s better to remain ignorant about certain things.
  2. It’s fair to treat people differently based on their intelligence.
  3. It is better to be smart and lonely than unintelligent and happy.
  4. Our relationships with other people are more important than our achievements.
  5. It is important to have empathy for others.
  6. It is better to accept your fate than to try to change it.

It was a short discussion this first time since we were working on a basic understanding of how to have a Socratic Seminar. Both sixth and seventh periods did an excellent job.

English I students finished up the planning for their analytic paragraphs on “The Cask of Amontillado.”
