English I students continued working on tone and poetry today, finally learning what that funny line we kept drawing in poems is called. It’s the tonal shift, the spot in the poem where the tone changes. It’s accompanied by the lyric moment, which is where the poem reveals what it’s really about, where the poem shows what epiphany it’s hiding for readers.

English 8 students worked on a review of effective readers skills in chapter 6 of Nightjohn. The first step was to work on exercising specific skills.

  1. Predict
  2. Predict
  3. Monitor comprehension/fix up
  4. Connect to prior knowledge
  5. Question what’s happening or monitor comprehension/fix up
  6. Question what’s happening
  7. Connect to prior knowledge then predict.

We then flipped it, looking at the skills I’d applied for the very same passages.
