English 8 students had a Socratic seminar today about Flowers for Algernon and some moral implications from the story.
We discussed two things:
- Should Charlie have gone through with the operation? What did he gain? What did he lose?
- What are the moral responsibilities of Dr. Nemur and Dr. Strauss in this case? Should they have run the experiment? What were their responsibilities to Charlie?
We’ll finish up tomorrow as we prepare for a test Monday on the unit.
English I students looked at the fourth derivative work about Odysseus, Samuel Palmer’s painting “Calypso’s Island: Departure of Ulysses.” We compared this painting to what we saw in the Suzanne Vega song and the originalĀ Odyssey.
We will be having a Socratic seminar tomorrow about the true nature of Calypso and the nature of her relationship with Odysseus.
