English I Honors students looked at metaphors and how they work — the vehicle provides new meaning to the tenor. If you don’t know what that means, ask a student from English I: they know now.

English 8 students finished up Nightjohn with a small project dealing with theme, one of the major standards for the first quarter. We looked at 15 possible themes with a partner and determined which 3 of those themes would be best applied to the novel:

  1. Absolute power leads to cruelty
  2. Power corrupts
  3. Power is often abused
  4. More money leads to more power
  5. More power leads to more money
  6. Money is the root of all evil
  7. Freedom is not free
  8. Freedom is more valuable than money
  9. Freedom is worth risking your life for
  10. Money can bring happiness
  11. Money doesn’t bring happiness
  12. Wealth doesn’t guarantee happiness
  13. Knowledge is its own form of power
  14. No amount of power can imprison the mind
  15. Knowledge leads to a certain freedom

We’ll be working on the project after the test tomorrow and for the remainder of the week.

Homework

  • English 8: prepare for tomorrow’s test.
  • English I Honors: complete the work we began in class today on metaphors.
Class Notes

Notes for the day's classes are available here.

Please note that this is a composite file including notes from all classes, though occasionally it might only be one or two classes. I don't differentiate in the file; that is up to you to do.
