English I Honors students looked at metaphors and how they work — the vehicle provides new meaning to the tenor. If you don’t know what that means, ask a student from English I: they know now.
English 8 students finished up Nightjohn with a small project dealing with theme, one of the major standards for the first quarter. We looked at 15 possible themes with a partner and determined which 3 of those themes would be best applied to the novel:
- Absolute power leads to cruelty
- Power corrupts
- Power is often abused
- More money leads to more power
- More power leads to more money
- Money is the root of all evil
- Freedom is not free
- Freedom is more valuable than money
- Freedom is worth risking your life for
- Money can bring happiness
- Money doesn’t bring happiness
- Wealth doesn’t guarantee happiness
- Knowledge is its own form of power
- No amount of power can imprison the mind
- Knowledge leads to a certain freedom
We’ll be working on the project after the test tomorrow and for the remainder of the week.
Homework
- English 8: prepare for tomorrow’s test.
- English I Honors: complete the work we began in class today on metaphors.
Class Notes
Notes for the day's classes are available here.
Please note that this is a composite file including notes from all classes, though occasionally it might only be one or two classes. I don't differentiate in the file; that is up to you to do.
