English I Honors finished working with “Because You Asked About the Line Between Prose and Poetry.”

We concluded with the observations borne out in the poem:

  1. Poetry is distilled language; we have to add back in what the poet distilled out.
  2. Poetry works on two levels: what’s happening in the poem and what the poem is really about.
  3. Poetry is about epiphanies.

Afterward, we looked at “Those Winter Sundays” to examine the role connotation plays in poetry.

English 8 students worked on participles for a little longer, wrapping up our identification work. We finished that with about half the class to spare, so we went back and worked on motifs in Nightjohn.
