English I Honors sixth period students completed their jigsaw work on phrases, with all students how having a working knowledge of gerunds, participles, infinities, appositives, and prepositional phrases. We’ll be doing more practice in class to prepare for a quiz next week.

English I Honors fourth period began a two-day look at the trial in To Kill a Mockingbird. Today we looked at changes made between the film and the book and worked to figure out the motives for the changes. Tomorrow we’ll continue looking at the passages from the book that deal with the trial.

English 8 Strategies students had a penultimate day of work with run-ons and fragments. We’ll do a little more practice tomorrow before having a quiz next week.

Creative writing students finished their jigsaw activity in which they taught each other the ten basic elements of any good journalistic piece of writing:

  • Timeliness – events that are happening right now, or news that is of interest to readers right now
  • Proximity – events or situations that occur near the reader
  • Uniqueness/Bizarreness – very unusual events or situations
  • Impact – news that will affect a large number of reader
  • Prominence – well-known people or groups of people
  • Suspense – events, such as disasters, where the outcome is not known
  • Conflict – people or groups opposing a situation or other groups of people
  • Emotions – love, hate, fear, jealousy, horror, pity
  • Progress – advances in science, medicine, or technology
  • Importance – important to the reader’s lives, family, education, health, or well-being

We’ll begin applying these to future story development.
