Today first and fourth periods had a Socratic Seminar on “the n-word.” This word, so offensive and yet so prevalent in culture, appears multiple times in To Kill a Mockingbird and we were practicing our formal discussion skills (the Speech/Listening standards in the Common Core) to talk about this touchy subject. We’ll finish up tomorrow.

Second and seventh periods worked on determining words’ meanings from context clues while connecting our theme of tradition and change to Nightjohn and slavery by reading and analyzing a short article about traditions slaves brought to the new world.

Homework

  • English I Honors: 
    • Find a news item that has something to do with “the n-word.”
    • remember: the Emmett Till argument discussion needs to be completed by Monday. Students need to make a contribution to the discussion to receive credit.
