First period read an article that has connections with the latest developments in Nightjohn. We did some vocabulary work with it as a starter before reading the article.

Copy these words and definitions. Choose two of these five words and think of a synonym (word with similar meaning) or antonym (word with opposite meaning)

  • acclaim (n): Enthusiastic and public praise.
  • infidel (n): A person who does not believe in religion or who adheres to a religion other than one’s own.
  • insurgent (n): A rebel or revolutionary.
  • militant (adj): Combative and aggressive in support of a political or social cause.
  • obscenity (n): An extremely offensive word or expression.

Afterward, I introduced students to an after-reading strategy called “Somebody Wanted But So.” Results are below:

First period notes

Full notes from the class are available here.

Second and fourth periods began the Odyssey. We did some reading and note-taking practice before presenting to group members the results of our short research project, keeping track of our notes on a graphic organizer.

Fifth period took care of some worsening behavior issues by introducing a new classroom management system/device. Afterward, we finished up the lesson from yesterday.

Homework
  • First period: none.
  • Second and fourth periods:
      • Prepare for quiz on background information about the Odyssey (pages 1025ff);
      • Reread the first portion of the poem that we read in class. (If you don’t have the book, you can use this PDF version for additional help. When you open it, you’ll have to rotate the image as it’s upside down. In Acrobat Reader, click on “View,” then “Rotate View” and then either “Clockwise” or “Counterclockwise.” Then repeat.)
