First period continued with The Giver. We completed the series of lessons on symbolism with the presentation and discussion today.

Second and sixth period began using Shirley Jackson’s “Charles” as a way to look at the effect point of view has on a story.

Fourth period continued with Great Expectations. We reviewed homework, then began looking at how the following motifs filter through the first ten chapters:

• economics
• family units
• education
• housing
• penal system
• law enforcement
• social classes
• gender roles

We will be going at a rapid pace, so it’s critical for students to keep up with the reading schedule. We will also be focusing less on some chapters and more on others; I’ll be putting a list of those chapters up tomorrow.

Homework

• First period: read chapters 10 and 11 from The Giver.
• Second period: page 350, 1-4.
  
• Fourth period:
  • continue working on newspaper project (tentatively due on Monday);
  • complete chapter 5 by tomorrow;
  • complete chapter 10 by Wednesday.
• Sixth period: finish reading “Charles.”
