English 8 finished their first round of practice with embedding quotes. We shared and assessed our homework. We determined we should include the following for their context:
- They had already made it to California.
- They were waiting for work.
We also determined we should use one of three quotes:
- ate wild verdolagas
- cooked outside on a makeshift stove
- Papa hunted with a rifle he borrowed from a neighbor
- and then I gave a few examples:
Afterward, we shared each other’s examples, and I gave three samples for students’ further consideration:
- In addition, while the family was waiting for work picking strawberries, the mother “cooked outside on a makeshift stove.”
- Additionally, as they waited for work, their “Papa hunted” using a gun “he borrowed from a neighbor”
- For example, the family was forced to eat “wild verdolagas” when they arrived at the camp because there was still no work for them.
We’ll continue working on embedded quotes as we continue with our third unit.
