We’re still working on text structures in English 8. We took the final formative assessment for the district-required goal-setting assignment, which I also tied into the district-required Common Formative Assessment using district-required vetted questions from Mastery Connect, the district-required platform. We were assessing standard RI-8.2 (“Analyze the impact of text features and structures on authors’ similar ideas or claims about the same topic”), which, curiously, is the same — verbatim — as standard RI-11.1 ( “Analyze the impact of text features and structures on authors’ similar ideas or claims about the same topic”). Unfortunately, of the ten questions from the vetted, district-required question bank that were supposed to assess the text structure standard, students protested that four of the questions had nothing at all to do with the standard, an assertion I confirmed with some investigation. As such, the assessment will not be recorded as a grade.
English I students worked on their Odyssey project. Students will need to work on it at home some over the next few days.
