English I students began a new, short unit on poetry. We’re looking at the poem “Because You Asked About the Line Between Prose and Poetry” in order to get some initial guidance on how to parse modern poetry.

English 8 students also worked on the start of a new unit. We’re reading Flowers for Algernon, with a focus on objective summaries and theme. We’re also using the unit familiarize ourselves and some practice with Cornell Notes, which is what we practiced today, taking notes on point of view:

Using point of view is effective because it’s just a review, which allows students to focus on the act of note-taking more.
