English 8 students had a test on Schaffer today. We’ll start a new unit tomorrow.

English I students began planning their second Schaffer paragraph, this time on Poe’s story “The Cask of Amontillado” and the question of whether or not we can trust the narrator.

To work through this question, students had a discussion in groups on four simple (though not all simple) questions:

  1. What can we infer about Montressor and Fortunato and their role/position in society?
  2. Who is he talking to? He keeps saying “you” – whom is he addressing?
  3. We have two periods of time in this story: 1) when Montressor did these actions 2) when Montressor is telling this story. How much time is in between these?
  4. Where does this story take place? What country?

The answers to these questions will form the basis of our paragraph.

Have you checked out some of the old man’s music yet?

Homework

  • English 8: complete No Red Ink as necessary.
  • English I Honors: consider how the ideas we discovered in class might form a Schaffer paragraph about the question of narrator reliability.
