Fourth and Fifth Periods (English I)

We had library orientation today, so that took up some of our time. With our remaining time, we looked at how we can make sense of the story “In the Family.” With a little close reading, we realized a plausible explanation for the oddities of the story was a mentally ill narrator, which we then narrowed further to possible schizophrenia. This makes sense in light of the auditory hallucinations that seem to be going on throughout the story, and the genetic component of schizophrenia echo the tile of the story itself.

This we turned into a basic Schaffer outline that uses the narrator’s apparent schizophrenia to explain the otherwise-implausible elements of the narrative. We’ll be doing something similar with Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado” starting tomorrow.

Sixth and Seventh Periods

After their library orientation visits, sixth and seventh periods worked on Schaffer paragraphs. Sixth period finished up their second Schaffer paragraph by adding the missing commentary to their two existing CDs. Seventh period did the same, but they’re completing their first Schaffer paragraph.

Homework

  • English 8: complete your Schaffer paragraph on Google Classroom.
  • English I Honors: read “The Cask of Amontillado” for tomorrow.
