All students took some time to practice with the Article of the Week, an assignment that they will be wrestling with all year.

It’s an assignment we’ll be working daily, so it’s important to make sure everyone knows what they’re doing.

English 8 students began working on Effective Readers’ Skills, which we will be using all year.

English I Honors students worked their intro to the Schaffer model, which is the writing model we will use for virtually every assignment this year.

Homework

  • English I Honors:
    • review the article of the week rubric;
    • use today’s information to reorder the following sentences (provided on a handout in class) into a Schaffer paragraph:
      • Because he was driving so slowly, it increased our stress.
      • Driving in the fog to Sacramento was a frightening experience.
      • For example, no signs were visible from the freeway, so I couldn’t see if there were any gas stations nearby to fill my near-empty tank.
      • Furthermore, a police car suddenly appeared ahead and drove at forty miles an hour for the next thirty minutes.
      • I kept hoping to see a station materialize in the fog and felt incapable of making a decision.
      • I realized I had driven on for hours, dreading the never-ending blurring lines on the horizon.
      • I was afraid the weather would never lift and I would be stuck driving in an endless loop forever.
      • In addition, it was 12:00 noon, and the fog was so thick that I couldn’t read the exit signs until I started passing them.
      • None of us was brave enough to pass him.
      • This made me panic at the thought of being stranded alone in a strange place.
      • When I finally reached Sacramento that afternoon, a great sense of relief permeated my body and mind.
