First period made a big shift in understanding and vocabulary. Unbeknownst to them, they’ve been working on the elements of argumentative writing all quarter in working on the Schaffer model.

Schaffer Model Elements of an Argument
Topic Sentence (TS) Claim
Concrete Detail (CD) Evidence

We began broadening the scope of the Schaffer model by giving it more general names.that are applicable not only to writing but also to speech. We’ll gradually begin using these terms interchangeably and adding a new term for commentary.

To that end, we created the following argument from Nightjohn

Notes from First Period

Second and fourth periods had a final day of planning for the final minor writing assignment for the short story unit. The actual writing will be optional: students who choose to complete the actual writing (to be turned in here) will have the opportunity to replace a lower grade from the same unit/assignment group with this (presumably) higher grade.

Soon students in fourth period will be embarking on the unit capstone project, with details here.

Fifth period continued with Nightjohn, reading chapter five and practicing a new reading engagement called “Save the Last Word For Me,” though a slightly scaffolded, modified version.
