First period looked at inferring and its relationship to implying:

  • Writers imply with the expectation that
  • Readers infer.

After reading the story “Conversation Piece” (a story that relies heavily on readers’ inferences), we turned back to The Diary of Anne Frank to make more inferences.

Second and sixth periods finished act one of The Diary of Anne Frank. We’ll do an exercise tomorrow in critical reading, then turn to act two.

Fourth period completed Romeo and Juliet by looking at the role fate plays in the play.

Homework
  • First period: none (though I did provide instructions for future double-sided journal assignments: students are now to infer something beyond the obvious meaning of the text for one entry).
  • Second and sixth periods:
    • complete questions 1-4 on page 832;
    • complete the Name/Nickname chart.
  • Fourth period:
    • complete the work on fate in Romeo and Juliet by looking closely at 5.1 and 5.2 for further examples;
    • complete the practice quiz for acts four and five.
