Students in English 8 began their last unit on The Diary of Anne Frank. We went through an anticipation guide to help put students in Anne’s place to see what she was facing.
English I students began To Kill a Mockingbird, which will likely be our last unit. We began by examining how Harper Lee successfully creates a Southern voice in the novel through style and content decisions:
Style Choices:
- Long sentences
- Diversions
- Dated language
- Folksy-sounding language
- Exaggeration/embellishment
- Understatement/deprecation
Content decisions:
- Importance of family,
- Sense of community,
- Importance of religion,
- Importance of time, place, and the past
We’ll be finishing up the work on this tomorrow.
Homework
- English 8 Studies: none.
- English I Honors: complete today’s work as needed.
