English 8 students completed the final reading for the immigration unit. We’ll be using this to review the process of developing the main idea and creating an objective summary of a text. It’s something students have done since elementary school, but it’s a skill we need to practice in order to keep it effective.
English I students finished up the first act from Romeo and Juliet. We went over Romeo’s first reaction when he meets Juliet:
We introduced the idea of a motif (a repeating image or idea in a text) and looked at how Shakespeare establishes the light/dark motif in the opening act.
We also looked at Romeo’s and Juliet’s first words to each other.
With a little prodding, students saw it was an embedded, hidden sonnet.
Homework
- English 8: complete the “Tears of Autumn” paragraph (the commentary).
