English 8 students began looking at the basic skills that will inform everything we read this year: effective readers’ skills. We started with the AOW, their first:
We finished with a Think Aloud for “Thank You, Ma’am,” a story by Langston Hughes. It allows students to see all the skills I implement as I read a text.
English I Honors also began working on their first true Article of the Week, looking at how to determine and annotate context clues:
They determined the meaning of “vied” without using any resources other than their own cognitive processes.
Afterward, we looked at the poem “The Gift” by Li-Young Lee as we began working to differentiate between summarizing and analyzing.
We will finish it up tomorrow.
