First period began a new unit. Today we worked on an anticipatory set for the lesson, working with the EQ, “How does literacy change lives?” I ended the class by reading Patricia Polacco’s Thank You, Mr. Falker to the class.

Second and sixth periods worked on their parts of speech unit, covering adverbs. Just two to go. We’ll be having the final test on it Friday; it will be an open-note test.

Fourth period continued with bias. We looked at a New York Times article on the recent Koran burning controversy to look at marginalization and bias. Specifically, we discussed the following questions:

  1. Who is in the text/picture/situation? Who is missing?
  2. What are the elements of the conflict (the two sides of the story)?
  3. Whose voices are represented? Whose voices are marginalized or discussed?
  4. What are the intentions of the author? What does the author want the reader to think?
  5. What could an alternative picture/text/situation say?
  6. How can the reader use this information to promote equity?
