It’s the same every single year: the tears start flowing as we move back to homeroom classrooms at the close of eighth-grade day. For so many students, it seemed the world was ending; it was sweet in its own way: it’s always refreshing to see innocence.

The sadness we associate in our youth with endings — the end of camp, the end of middle school, graduation — seems somehow to fade as we grow older and realize that our adolescent fears were for naught: life did go on, and it often improved.

I wish all my students a relaxing, refreshing summer, and more success in high school than they even dreamed of.
