English 8 students went off-script a little today: we were supposed to start our next reading, “Under the Wire,” but as I read through students’ responses to the video we watched yesterday (“Harvest of Shame”), I realized we had an opportunity for an effective Socratic Seminar.
Many students were asking about how it as possible that people made so little money, so we had a topic for our seminar.
We discussed two things:
- How could we as a society help them in their situation — how could we help them earn more money?
- How much would we be willing to pay extra for food (i.e., to sacrifice) to help them earn more money?
English I students worked on appositives a bit before returning to the Odyssey. The reason, students soon learned, was simple: Homer loves appositives.
