English I students worked today on the first lesson of our short story unit. This unit instructs students on the basics of literary analysis, helps students discern the difference between analyzing and summarizing, and provides students with ample writing practice.

Students at work analyzing an analysis paragraph

We focused on the poem “The Gift” by Li-Young Lee, and we read and differentiated between a summary of the poem and an analysis of the poem.

Notes from English I class

English 8 students practiced differentiating between observing and inferring while learning a little about their teacher. We’ll be starting our first unit proper on Monday.

Homework

  • English 8 Studies: none.
  • English I Honors: do enough basic research on the Irish Civil War that you can:
    • explain what they were fighting over;
    • identify the names of the two sides;
    • explain what each side wanted.
