Students spent the morning going over the LEAP test for the state education department, so we were on a testing schedule that gave students a little over half an hour in each class.

In the limited time we had, we began by going over the mental scene summary we should be building (a one- to two-sentence summary of each scene):

  • 1.1: Fight in the market; prince’s decree; Romeo’s unrequited love
  • 1.2: Paris’s request for Juliet’s hand; Capulet says to wait and suggest he find someone else at the party
  • 1.3: Lady Capulet informs Juliet of Paris’s proposal
  • 1.4: On the way to the party, Romeo relates a dream he had; Mercutio mocks him with the Queen Mab speech
  • 1.5: The party

We then covered a learning target related to previous targets regarding hidden stage instructions throughout the text. Students looked at the opening lines of 1.5 to determine what Shakespeare had in mind for the staging:

Afterward, we watched an old version of 1.5 to see how close we were in our blocking (marking the actions and such of a play). We determined that we were fairly close.

Homework

  • English I Honors:
    • analyze the passage from Capulet for hidden staging instructions (at the bottom of today’s work);
    • re-read 1.5.
