In Europe, as in America, one cannot smoke inside public buildings. Filthy habit, cigarettes, but an addiction is an addiction, I guess. What do the people who are addicted to raising their risk of cancer significantly do in an airport, though? They can’t step outside to smoke without going through all the security again, so the airport in Europe (and probably America, though I can’t recall seeing them) build little airtight glass boxes with their own ventilation system for people to light their cancer sticks. A costly but effective solution: I’m assuming the airports do it to prevent smokers from sneaking smokes in bathrooms and such.

It’s still an odd sight for me, though. Every trip to Poland (we usually fly Charlotte to Munich to Krakow) I find myself just staring at the people who have placed themselves in boxes like little show figurines.
