English 8 Strategies students re-started the bi-weekly writing session that defined much of the first semester. Tuesdays and Fridays will be writing and consultation days, and we began today with a list of almost 190 argumentative writing topics. In the coming weeks, students will begin learning how give meaningful feedback to each other and how to implement that feedback into their writing.

Fourth period English I Honors concluded an introductory lesson on racism and Jim Crow laws in the early twentieth century in anticipation of To Kill a Mockingbird. We also began looking at voice in the novel and how Lee achieves it.

Sixth period English I Honors completed work on Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” in anticipation of the allegory we’re about to read, Lord of the Flies.

We concluded the lesson looking at a claymation version of the allegory.

  • fourth period: read and mark the handout from class, which constitutes the first few pages of To Kill a Mockingbird;
  • sixth period: read chapter one of Lord of the Flies;
  • all students: continue working on the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack piece.
