First and fifth periods returned to a common skill that we will be practicing throughout the year: developing an argument with backing from a secondary source. Or, as the EQ put it, “How do I back up my ideas with the text?”

First period’s notes

We looked at two characters — Mr. and Mrs. Van Daan — and determined the characteristics and evidence in a scaffolded way: first I modeled (once again) how to do this, then we worked as a class, and finally students worked with partners.

  • Second and fourth periods: find and bring in an example either of transfer or glittering generalities.
  • Fifth period: review pages 797-803 and find three of our vocabulary words in use;
