In a busy classroom, it can be difficult to communicate needs. As a teacher, I need to know that a raised hand is a question about content and not a procedural request (like going to the restroom).

In order to do this, we use seat signals.

“Can I use the bathroom, please?”

Crossing your index and middle fingers, hold them up.

“I need a new pencil.”

Hold your pencil up and gently twirl the end.

“I need a tissue.”

Gently pinch your nose between your thumb and forefinger (as if you’re holding your nose underwater).

“I need to get out of my seat.”

Hold your forefinger in the air and make small circles with it.
