First period began and completed the work on analyzing Anne’s gifts to everyone. We spent the first portion of the period doing group work, then came back together as a class to debrief (see below) and finish up act one.

Second and fourth periods began the shift into specific poetic forms in our poetry unit. We began with one of the most challenging poetic forms to write, the villanelle. We spent most of our class time looking at Elizabeth Bishop’s absolute masterpiece, “One Art.” It’s an ingenious poems on so many levels, but we began by examining the poem for patterns in its content.

We then switched to the analysis of form, critical when looking at villanelles:

Fifth period shifted to some planning for writing. We’ll be using the Schaffer model to fashion character sketches before moving to the second part of the unit.

Homework
  • First period:
    • finish reading act one;
    • complete questions 1-6 on page 832.
  • Second and fourth periods:
    • continue working on the poetry anthology project;
    • examine the three villanelles we read in class and compose 3-5 rules for the poetic form.
  • Fifth period: use the second example of Mr. Van Daan’s sexism to create a second concrete detail.
